Item 1: Why is LJ being so damn slow? WRY?

Item 2: No really, I'm working on an Origins post, I promise. But this is not it.

Item 3, the reason for posting at all: THIS IS IMPORTANT.

You may have heard or seen me mention shadesong's Fantastical Blogathon 2008 Adventure, but I'm writing about it now because it's time to go bid on auctions. Auctions? Yes, auctions. 'Song collected 58 handmade items from artists and crafty people, put them all on eBay, and will be writing flash fiction about each item from the perspective of a psychometric xenoarchaeologist examining artifacts from the last days of Earth. Which sounds pretty cool, IMO.

Anyway, you can sponsor her directly for the writing, or you can bid on stuff at the eBay auctions, but please do consider this. All proceeds go the the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center, who are an amazing group working to help survivors of rape and abuse, and actively working at prevention to start nipping sexual abuse in the bud. She's written more about what they're doing here, if you're interested.

Lots of neat jewelry in the auctions, including a piece by kythryne of Wyrding Studios, a bootleg cd from s00j, a painting from sweetevangeline, a poster from ultra_lilac (which is super hot, BTW), and, oh yeah, I knitted a couple of things. Some baby booties that I like a lot and a lace cowl that was really fun to make and is really nice and shiny in person.

So go! Bid! Raise money for a super cause!

This ends your PSA for the day.

That sounds like a really cool thing, both from a creative perspective and a giving-back perspective too. Totally going to check it out.

Yay, thank you! The stories should be a lot of fun, and those will all be written on Saturday. I guess I should have included that. . .

The cowl is beautiful! It's not my shade of blue, but I have an aunt who's gaga for that colour...

And I think I'm in love with that peridot and moonstone pendant...

Where will the stories be posted?

Both on 'Song's lj, and at the Wordpress blog, there's a link in all of the auctions.

That's ok! It's the part you'd skip over to get to the juicy pictures, as it's the boilerplate (broilerplate?) stuff.

DELICIOUS PICTURES NOM NOM NOM

Seriously, though. That's a great cause, and a really different way to do it. I take it she's done this in the past?

Sort of. 'Song's been doing Blogathon for a couple of years now, and she always writes fiction, but last year people donated stuff for an auction kind as an addition? And that's where she got the idea for the Extravaganza that is this year. So when she started talking about it, of course I was like, "Hmm, I can knit something?" 'Cause it's what I do. But you knew that. :)

I'd do the same! Knitting for charity is a great excuse to do something I'd probably be doing anyway :P

Exactly. Although I did almost mess up. Both of mine are patterns I got from other places, and I almost forgot that things like that have copyrights that include selling the finished items, eep! But luckily I remembered in time, emailed Cat and Romi, and they were both really enthusiastically positive about it. So that worked out.

I noticed the "by permission" note in the auction! It's a good thing you remembered--that really is a sticky wicket. And good, too, that they were okay with it :)

Is it after 50 years or 80 years that copyright on patterns is no longer an issue? I remember nearly getting into trouble with someone on the knitting community because I shared part of a vintage pattern, and I had to check the date to make sure I hadn't done something stupid...

I have no idea. There's got to be a place to look that up, though, but I'm not sure where because my brain still isn't working.

Yep! Mostly I'd worked from one-word writing prompts, and mostly in my urban fantasy world. I'm really stretching this year! This is my sixth year, and the second time I'm blogging for BARCC. (I also volunteer there.)

Stories will all be on my regular LJ. The WordPress link is there for my mom and fellow BARCC volunteers, because the usual content of my LJ isn't always family-friendly! :)

(Emily, thanks again!)

I also gave the Wordpress link to the designers who's patterns I used, just so you know.
